The Tangram Project, a collaboration between NPO FootRoots and Making Space, proposes a solution to address plastic waste in Cebu while promoting early childhood education. It involves creating tangrams, a traditional geometric puzzle toy, from recycled plastics.

By utilizing NPO FootRoots' recycling machines and Making Space's facilities, the initiative aims to provide daycare children with vital hands-on play materials, foster creativity within Cebu's maker district, and establish a replicable model for other barangays to empower communities through plastic recycling and child well-being.

This project is supported by the Japan Foundation.

Filipino children are experiencing a decline in free play, most notably due to the prevalence of digital entertainment.

This shift away from traditional tactile play is impacting their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.

The Philippines’ plastic problem worsens due to the convenience of plastic packaging and the lack of recycling facilities.

Plastic Problem

A dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat polygons, called tans, which are put together to form shapes.

This can be made by repurposing discarded plastic items like bottle caps and molding into geometric shapes, offering an eco-friendly way to create a fun and educational tool.

Coordinate with Brgy. Kamputhaw Daycare center to assess capacity and needs.

01

Map out each role of the project with NPO FootRoots providing the machinery and knowhow while Making Space handles the facility and manpower.

02

Hold workshops with the barangay and partner with the community for co creation and teach them how to make the tangram

03

Create the tangrams using the plastic bottle caps collected from the community. These will then be turned over to the Brgy. Kamputhaw Daycare Center.
